Fiat CR.42 CN Night Fighter

Classic Airframes' 1/48 scale Fiat CR 42 CN may be ordered online from Squadron

Introduction

For a detailed examination of the kit contents, see Steven "Modeldad" Eisenman's in-box review here on HyperScale.

Here is the latest manifestation of the Classic Airframes CR.42 series, the CN night fighter.

The kit provides markings for no less than five aircraft, four Black-grey and one in a mottle finish, with various exhausts and underwing lights as appropriate.

Construction

This is my second CR.42, and after my initial struggles with the photo-etched cockpit on the first one, I was pleased to find the inclusion of a photograph of the assembled cockpit in this release. If you refer to the photo, the cockpit assembly goes much more easily.

I would still recommend thinning out the coaming area above the instrument panels to provide more clearance, though.

Painting and Markings

I finished my CN in Polly Scale acrylics, with a base shade approximating RLM 66 and the addition of slightly lighter and darker areas to break up the monochromatic finish.

A light dry-brushing brought out the subtle but effective fabric texture.

The Microscale-printed decals are of their usual high quality and went on without any problems.

Conclusion

For a biplane, this kit is a surprisingly quick build and really looks the part when completed.

Now on to the ground-attack version!
