Here is my 1/48 scale Tamiya Heinkel He 219.
This is nice kit which only requires a little attention to detail and
some very minor enhancements. To this end, I corrected the pilot's
headrest, added some photo-etched details to the cockpit such as
throttle levers, rudder pedals and seat belts.
One serious omission were the bulkheads in the rear of the main
landing gear bays. It looks like Tamiya had intended to put something
there, but ultimately chose not to. It was a simple matter to fabricate
two bulkheads from .010 styrene, along with a few strips and access
panels to block the rear of the nacelle. I fabricated new antennae along
the bottom of the fuselage from piano wire and made the landing lights
from concave disks of foil filled with 5 minute epoxy.
The model is finished in the markings of a machine from 1/Nachtjagdgeschwader
1, while based at Sylt-Westerland, Germany during May 1945. Perhaps the
most difficult aspect of the build is actually the painting.
I wanted to obtain that soft, diffused mottled look of RLM 76 applied
over RLM 75, but I did not want to apply the RLM 76 over the RLM 75. So
to obtain the look, I used very thin RLM 75 and applied it in very light
wispy mottles, with no real distinct outlines over the RLM 76.
