P-61 Black Widow

Monogram's 1/48 scale P-61 Black Widow is available online from Squadron

Construction

This model was on my top five to build since some years now, but some other project was always on the way untill now. I finally built it using an IPMS/Guatemala theme contest (WWII Bipropelers) as an excuse. The model comes straight from the box except for the decals, wich are the P-61´s super scale decals that a good friend of mine (Manolo Briz) gave me.

The model is a real deal....you have to make major work to make it fit. A lot of plastic and puty on the wings base and a lot of plastic to make the cristals fit in; it seems that the cristals mold has shrink over the years. I also rescribed the raised panel lines. The flaps looked more like air brakes on the extended position so I worked a little bit on the pins to leave them in a 45° angle. I also added the antenas and seatbelts.

Painting and Markings

I used Testor's Model Master colours for the invasion strips and Gunze paints for the Neutral Gray and Olive Drab (both of which I faded with white).

The engine exhaust trails were made with Testor's Metalizers and a turpentine wash.

I also added Greif lights to the green-yelllow-red light under the wing.

I hope you enjoy my model.
