Revell's new 1/72 scale Type VII C U-Boat is probably one of the
easiest models that I have ever built.
Aside from a slightly tricky fit getting the torpedo tubes to sit
snugly in place, which was easily solved using a slower setting liquid
poly, this model almost literally fell together.
Painting,
Markings, Weathering & Figures
|
The most time consuming part of the entire project was the
weathering. The painting only took a couple of hours but the weathering
process lasted for two or three weeks!
Every technique I posses in my inventory was pressed into service on this
one and hopefully paid off in the end. All of the rust streaks were done
using Winsor and Newton's peat brown ink although in hindsight (correct
spelling Mr. Lomas!!) I would have been better off using a washed oil like
raw umber. Oh well we learn.
The algae is Tamiya Dark Green thinned to about 10 percent paint 90
percent thinner which came up pretty good as I wanted to give the
impression of being wet without glossing up the model.
The figures are from CMK and are really funky little guys. They are really
well sculpted and give a sense of scale to a massive model. Highly
recommended.
The Decals are from Iliad and are really good to work with although I
wouldn’t recommend any setting solution as they do not react well with it
and don’t need it at all.
When I finished this model I was well pleased with the
result and I hope you guys like it as well, and you in all Phil. Oh and
sorry about the very tacky bin liner backdrop but it was the only thing I
had to hand that would fit this beast in.
Thanks to David Hannant for the sample to build for the Colindale shop.
