Flettner Fl 282 V6 Kolibri

Flettner Fl 282 V6 Kolibri (Hummingbird)

Huma's 1/48 scale Fl 282 is vailable online from Squadron.com

Introduction

The model represents a Flettner Fl 282 V6 "KOLIBRI" flown by Hauptmann Claus von Winterfeldt of Erprobungs-und Lehrkommando 20, while assigned to the Kriegsmarine minelayer 'Drache' in the Agean Sea in early 1943.

This is the Huma 1/48 kit and is an absolute gem of a model. I really could only find serious fault with one aspect of the kit, which was the decals, both in terms of accuracy and quality. As printed by Huma, the national insignia has a black border which should not be present on the V6 prototype.

As for quality, I found the decals to be thick, hard to work with and having a weave-like texture once dry.

Construction

I performed minimal modifications to the kit, which is a testimonial to both the quality of the Huma moulding and design and my inherent laziness.

Additional work was confined to the following:

Fuselage

  • detail bolts added to upper transmission housing

  • exhaust pipes drilled out

  • Eduard photo-etched seatbelts added

  • dampers added to rotor blades

  • bezels added to featureless instrument panels

Landing Gear

  • landing light replaced with MV Products lens

  • shock portion of nose wheel strut covered with metal foil

Paint

  • The airframe was painted with Xtracolor X221 RLM 63 Lichtgrau

Conclusion

See, I really did not do much at all!

A complete build review article will be appearing in a future issue of SAMI.
