Tamiya's 1/48 scale Spitfire Vb Trop is available online from Squadron.com

Construction

This Spitfire Vc started out life as the Tamiya 1/48 scale Spitfire Vb Trop version.

The kit was given to me fully assembled and ready to paint as a Mk.Vb Trop by a mate, so the achieving the wing conversion retrospectively was a real challenge!

I cut out the Vb gun ports and replaced these with the Ultracast "C" wing large cannon bulges. I also removed the lower wing bulges and replaced with plastic card and filler. The small flap actuator fairing was scratch built and fitted where the large bulges were. I filled the no 2 and 7 0.303 gun positions and rescribed them one rib outboard.

There were various other details and panels that had to be filled and rescribed as well. The only remaining inaccuracy with the wings is the shape of the wheel well bulges on the upper surfaces but I could not find any reference for Aussie Mk.Vcs.

The propeller was replaced with the Ultracast short Rotol spinner.

Painting and Markings

The finish is Foliage Green and Dark Earth upper surfaces and Azure bBue Lower surface with a Sky spinner and fuselage stripe.

Decals are from Aeromaster. The markings are for ZP-X/BS219 of 457 SQN flown by Flying Officer Butch Hamilton.
